Not to hijack this thread, but it reminds me so much of the story of Marshmallow, the big, fluffy Maine Coon we adopted last Fall.

I was volunteering at a shelter and discovered Marshmallow, he was on "death row". They decided he wasn't "adoptable", so they weren't doing much to help him. His beautiful, long white fur was all matted, dirty, yellow & brown, he smelled horribly, yet somehow his sweet personality came through. I tried to convince the shelter with some effort to groom him he would be adoptable, but they wouldn't consider placing him up front for adoption. I guess he wouldn't be good advertising for the shelter, a smelly, dirty cat.

Well, I couldn't leave him there and ended up bringing him home, even though we have 4 other cats. I couldn't leave him there like that. I immediately took him to a vet who shaved his matted fur, bathed him and gave him antibiotics and steroids to ease his skin infections. I will post pics when I figure it out, but today he's magnificant---a big, fluffy while Maine Coon with a long black tail and plenty of love for all. I just wish I had a bigger yard to adopt more animals, I stopped volunteering at the shelter, it tore my heart out. At least Marshmallow found a new, loving family!

Animals are incredible. No matter how horrible people are they can always bounce back.

That was sweet. Reminds me of a stray-ish shih-tsu that my sister and stepgrandad take care of. One of the neighbors owns the thing, but when it started coming around it was underfed and horribly matted and ungroomed. After a little while when they realized he was friendly they started to feed him a bit, and since then have groomed him multiple times. It's like a whole different dog, and loves every one of us.
