It's awesome to come on the threads here and get support from all the other fur parents and know you have folks who can share their stories of similar situations and tips they have to get through it. Spend as much time as you can with your gal and know she appreciates the love you have given her throughout her stay in your home.

yeah, I never knew a dog could live that long; she is pretty amazing. My vet says he's seen other shih tzu's live that long but mine has had congestive heart failure forever, but she keeps on keeping on...

I also have a shih tzu, she is 20 yrs old. She is completely blind, deaf, no teeth, and has alzheimer's. Just recently noticed that her tongue was hanging out of her mouth to one side. I looked inside her mouth and I was horrified. There was a tumor covering the entire inside of half her mouth and jaw. She was put on prednisone and it is amazing how much better she feels. She was sleeping all day, withdrawn, did not want to be petted. Now its like I have my dog back. I hate thinking that she was in pain and that's why she was withdrawn, yet that seems to be the reality. I know I do not have a lot of time with her left, and am grateful for every minute I get to be with her. I think that sometimes pain can make them withdrawn. Not saying your dog is in pain, but just make sure. It absolutely breaks my heart knowing she was suffering. If only I could go back in time......at least she is comfortable now. Yes its hard to let go, but worse knowing that your beloved pet was in pain and you didn't see the signs.

my dog also was my shadow but about a two years ago, she quit sleeping with me. Then about a year ago, she quit wanting to go in the car. I had to have her put to sleep today...it was hard, but not as hard as it would've been a few years ago. I don't know if they know something is up, but after reading these posts, I wonder....
