Dog intervenes in grizzly attack, but bear is eventually shot
Weiman said his wife, Marianne Hamilton, was walking their 10-year-old boxer, Mojabe, on an abandoned airstrip that's part of their property on Bear Ridge Circle.
It was on the airstrip, in the open. Its ears were back, and it was coming at her, he said. "She kept remarking about the eyes, the eyes. The eyes were big and coming," Weiman said.
He heard her screaming, grabbed his .44 pistol, ran outside and saw the boxer "intervene and cut the bear off." Hamilton ran behind a pickup truck. The dog chased the bear across the road.
Yep, they are awake and hungry. Thank goodness Marianne Hamilton had her dog with her. No matter how alert we humans are, dogs are even more attuned to their surroundings. We might be able to see more detail, but dogs have us beat hands down when it comes to hearing and sense of smell. The boxer was just doing what comes natural to him, protecting his owner, but he is still a hero in my book.
Too bad the bear had to die, but IMHO everybody did the right and proper thing, especially Mojabe.
Yes, that was a shame indeed, but I do not fault the guy for shooting the bear. He did everything right. Judging from its size (only 150 pounds with 3" claws according to the article) the bear could not have been more than a year or two old at most. Probably the bear's first summer away from his mother.
With 50+ grizzly bears, 400+ black bears, and 1,200+ moose living within the city limits of Anchorage, there is going to be encounters. I am always armed for bear and my dogs are always with me, but I have had the good fortune these last 19 years not to be in a situation where I had to defend myself. I would much rather watch live bears from a respectful distance than be forced to kill one.
