My friends and I are thinking of taking a long weekend up in Duluth/the North Shore. We are possibly going to be going over labor day weekend. Would it be too crowded up there do you think, or would it be alright. We would be traveling from south of the cities, so I don't know if traffic would be an issue.

It will be ok once you clear the cities so should be fine. If camping that could be another issue as many may be full for sure

The radio newscast today updating us on I-35 traffic estimated that there is an additional two hours of delays due to the half dozen one-lane restrictions on your way up...worst times being Friday night going northbound and sunday afternoon going southbound. None will be wrapped up by Labor Day so if those estimates are true I imagine you're looking at 2-3+ hours (Labor Day will be even worse than a regular weekend...potentially much worse) in addition to the 2-3 hour drive it already was. Perhaps you can time your travels to somehow avoid the rush.

I worked at a campground last summer, and yes, all campgrounds will be full in the surrounding Duluth area...we tried calling around to others to help folks out and it was to no avail.

I wouldn't really call it "crowded," but there IS a pretty good stream of traffic going by on North Shore Drive on most summer weekends. I suspect there will be more on a holiday weekend.

I would find a place to stay ASAP. When I moved to Duluth in the summer of 2009, I had to live in hotels until I found a house. Every hotel I stayed in was booked to capacity most weekends.
