ahh what? my post is in regards to Star691 post claiming that Minot is colder than I.F..

Not that it is the coldest spot in the lower 48.

Is Duluth the coldest place in the lower 8? No, but with the wind off the lake and the higher humidity it sure feels like it.

Some notes of interest:
  1. The lowest temperatures recorded in the NWS Duluth county warning area were -46 degrees at both International Falls, MN (ASOS) and Babbitt, MN (CO-OP).
  2. The -46 degree low was tied for the 5th lowest on record at International Falls. Temperature records date back to 1897. The record is -55 degrees which was recorded on January 6, 1909.
  3. The -46 degree low was tied for the lowest on record at the International Falls Airport. The official observing station was moved to the airport in 1939. This is tied with the -46 degree reading from January 6, 1968.
  4. The -25 degree low at Duluth is tied for the 5th lowest minimum temperature in the last decade (since 2000). The lowest minimum temperature of the 2000s thus far has been -30 on January 29, 2004.
  5. The state record low temperature in Minnesota was recorded at Tower, Minnesota on February 2, 1996. The low was -60 degrees. That was also the coldest temperature ever recorded east of the Mississippi River.
  6. The state record low temperature in Wisconsin was recorded at Couderay on February 2nd and February 4th of 1996. The temperatures dipped down to -55 degrees both nights.
INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — International Falls is officially the "Icebox of the Nation."

Parshall, North Dakota-60Feb 15, 1936Parshall, North Dakota-60Feb 15, 1936A low of -60 was also recorded in Paschall, ND on that date. Some other places in ND were likely even colder than that.

And many places have been colder than what you or I have have posted in both states.
The thing is it needs to be an official recording of the temp.

Nether state(MN or ND) has the lowest temp "recorded" in the lower 48.

lowest temps by state

Depends on what you consider a city.

Gunnison, CO, averages 37.3 F (2.9 C)

Tower, MN averages 34.6

In addition to holding the "official" low record in Minnesota of -60 in Feb of 1996 Tower also holds the low record for...

January @ -57 degrees
July @ 24 degrees
August @ 21 degrees

the feb 1996 event was widely anticipated and the media and other "observers" headed for Embarass, MN which was expected to be the cold spot. However, the official weather station's primary and back-up thermometers broke (another thermometer at that location recorded -63 that morning). So, everyone hurried over to the nearby Tower weather station where the -60 (acually -59.5) was recorded. One of the media members than took the thermometer out of the weather box a couple hundred yards to a nearby swamp and an "unofficial" temperature of -73 was recorded.

I guess you were the only one that didn't get the memo about this being about the lower 48. Besides, Nome being on the coast is relatively warm by Alaska standards and it's record low (-54) falls far short of Tower's record low.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong!

The coldest weather city is Fairbanks, Alaska.

Fairbanks Weather - Alaska - Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Duluth Weather - Minnesota - Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Fargo Weather - North Dakota - Average Temperatures and Rainfall

Again, what's a city? Gunnison is a "home rule municipality". It has less than 5,900 people living within its borders. That's less than Hermantown.

Tower is probably the the coldest city in Minnesota; but Tower has only 500. Is it really a "city", or is it better called a "town"? I've been to Tower before; it seems larger, probably due to tourism, but still is a small town.

Duluth is unequivocally a "city"; and it is the coldest place that can undeniably be called a "city" in the Lower 48.
