From St. Paul here. Wondering where to eat in Duluth when I drive through there on my way to the Iron Range..

I know two places were on Diners Drive-Ins and Drives:

Northern Waters Smokehaus

and

Duluth Grill

Are those great places? I take it they are.

What is that place with pies (Betty's Pies??)?

Are there other places people here would recommend?

Thanks in advance...

Duluth Grill is fantastic. Northeast of town about 10 miles up the shore is the New Scenic Cafe which is also great. Bettie's pies is not worth it, mediocre food, average pies.

Do you have business in Duluth? I don't know exactly where you are heading on the range but there are easier ways to get to the Iron Range than going through Duluth. One example is taking Hwy 33 off of I35 through Cloquet, near the Black Bear Casino exit. That leads you directly to Hwy 53 and to the range cities.

If you are going up the shore first then I agree with the previous poster and definitely about the NO to Betty's Pie. It is overrated and they are still getting business because of their reputation of decades ago.

Happy trip to you!

Duluth Grill is FANTASTIC!! We love it.

Another one, from DDD, I think, as well - Anchor Bar in Superior. Just burgers and fries. But tasty, hot, cheap. We went back two nights in a row...just that good!

NWS was a disappointment to us.

Really wish we would had gone to Duluth Grill.

We went to NWS twice and loved it. It's busy, and there aren't enough places to sit. The first time we went I found those points annoying. The second time we got our orders to go.

If you make it up to Grand Marais, I'd recommend the Angry Trout Cafe.

We ordered on the phone and picked it up.

The disappointment was in the food. Very little meat in our sandwiches and the bread wasn't fresh. We ordered later in the day so maybe that explained the lack of freshness in our bread?

Hmm, not sure. Our visits were a couple of years ago, so another possibility is that quality has dropped. We ordered fish, by the way, which was just delicious. You might give them another chance next time you're in town.

Duluth Grill is highly overrated and expensive. Save your money and go to Randy's on Superior Street.

Don't know about Duluth restaurants - I never found a good one, though I'm sure they're out there.

But if you're headed to the Range - the best restaurant on the Range is "The Whistling Bird" in Gilbert. Jamaican cuisine! Or if you want the traditional - "Valentini's" in Chisholm honors The Range's Italian heritage. In Hibbing there's the "Sportmens" and the "Thirsty Moose".

I'd even voluntarily go back to the Iron Range for a night just for a meal at the Whistling Bird!
