Google Maps Aerial View shows Duluth and Superior with large areas of what look like bright orange holding ponds. Also see adjacent what looks like oil industry and other similar industrial. Is this region just another great lake exploited wasteland?

Nah. The orange color just shows the presence of iron bacteria. Some soil and rocks in Minnesota contain minerals very high in iron. As rain falls or snowmelts on the land surface and water seeps through iron-bearing soil and rock, iron can be dissolved into the water.

Oil refinery caught fire two springs ago, friend in Silver Bay could see the smoke. Superior seems like a wasteland to me from few times I’ve been through it this year.
