Just thought I'd extend my invitation to any of you on here who have yet join to the effort to nominate Duluth or Superior for Google's High Speed Fiber Internet initiative. In case you haven't heard, Google is planning to select a city with a population between 50,000 and 500,000 as a test bed for their vision of what consumer and commercial level Internet access should be. Google will run fiber to every home and business in the city of their choice and provide service priced similarly to other ISPs.

This sort of Internet access to the home and business would immediately make Duluth nationally visible and attractive to medical and technology related businesses looking to develop new technologies with high bandwidth requirements.

Duluth was one of the first cities to officially jump into the competition and the effort has the full support from the mayor. In fact, Don Ness was part of the initial push.

Community members are encouraged to officially nominate Duluth or Superior (this is a "Twin Ports" push) at https://www.google.com/appserve/fibe...YXRpb24Y9oJSDA.

Also, be sure to join our official Facebook group, which just hit 3,400 members! //www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=297173064066

Check out the official Google Twin Ports web site as http://google.twinports.coop/ Become part of the initiatives registry and let us know how you'd be willing to help!

They are making amkovie for this and hosted auditions today at the DECC. Funny, and even Al Franken is lobbying for Google to go to Duluth.

Yup. I'm a bit nervous about the movie. I hope it turns out okay. Al Franken's video was definitely a help though.

Right, knowing Duluth, there is probably a ''Push'' to keep internet out. This how most residents seem to act towards anything new or innovative.

They will probably argue that "High-Speed internet will hurt the 'up-north' integrity of Duluth"

Well, I haven't heard of any group or people against this initiative. In reality, this is one of the few times I've seen so many people from across the city come together and give a great effort. Nearly $30,000 dollars has been donated to the effort from businesses and individuals; if that doesn't show support, I don't know what does.

The only negativity I've heard from a community about Google Fiber was from Topeka, Kansas. There's a small group of people there that started a "Keep Google out of Topeka, Kansas" Facebook group. Turns out, they're all local telecom employees and are afraid of losing their jobs.

You might find this interesting as well: A marketing firm from Grand Rapids, MI analyzed and reported on overall buzz about Google Fiber per city on Facebook, Twitter, etc. Duluth ended up coming out on top in nearly all categories. You can view the results of the report here: http://blog.steketeegreiner.com/wp-c...ber-Report.pdf

Also interesting, of all the cities being talked about in the news that have Facebook support groups of any measurable size, Duluth has the smallest actual population. Grand Rapids, MI has the largest population and yet Duluth has the highest percentage of it's population supporting it on Facebook. Now obviously Facebook matters little in the grand scheme of things, but it is nice to see Duluth coming out of the gates with such strong community support.
