My wife, young son, and I will be moving to West Duluth in a few weeks. We are looking at renting a townhome in west Duluth. We are coming from Northern California and are looking for a safe, quiet, family friendly place to raise our family. We found Ramsey Village Townhomes and wanted some feedback on the area from locals.

Any info is appreciated- thanks in advance.

I've been to the Super One in that area plenty of times. I'm not the most familiar with West Duluth, but I don't think it's a super good area around the Super One there. It looks like that it may one day change, but I think it's going through some gentrification. It's really good access to the freeway though. It all depends though, do you NEED to be in West Duluth? What do you need close access to?

There's plenty of other parts of the Duluth area (even in West Duluth) that I'd consider before the area that you specified.

Ramsey Village area is newer pre-fab homes that are designed to look like they were built about 100 years ago. It is tucked away between Central Ave, Grand Ave (runs all through W. Duluth, and I-35. It is by a Menards Hardware (super big store) and a Super One grocery strore. On the other side of I-35 is Western Lake Superior Sanitary District and New Page Paper Mill.

You are also close to Denfeld Shopping District (blockbuster, Grandma's Restaraunt Chain, tanning salon, Taco Johns) a K-mart, a couple of medical clinics, DBU, and UNitedHealth Group has an office down there.

Lots of stuff, but there are nicer neighborhoods too.

Thanks for your response. We don't need to be in West Duluth, but we just found a place online that offered what we were looking for: small dogs, laundry in unit, and easy access to freeway. Could you recommend areas that are nice in Duluth (any area)? Thanks very much!

Thanks for the info! What neighborhoods or areas of Duluth are nicer? Are there any that you could recommend? We are looking for a rental but we aren't sure which areas are actually nice to live in. Thanks again.

Duluth is a very unique city. It's a city that is roughly 5 miles wide and about 28 miles long... West Duluth has it's 'run down' areas, but that's what you're going to find in many rust belt cities such as Erie PA, Cleveland, Pittsburgh. I've lived in Duluth for nearly 2 years and always have heard WEst Duluth having the moniker of being the "bad" area. Being from the Twin Cities, I find that laughable. It's not THAT bad there. Some run down homes and bumpy streets, but for the most part, it's a safe place-it's Northern Minnesota for Pete's sakes.

I would wait for Duluthian or another useer to stop by the thread to give neighborhood information.

Central Hillside, Lincoln Park and West Duluth tend to get the most bad reputaions.

The city has

Piedmont
Central Hillside
Downtown
Canal Park
Park Point
Duluth Heights
Chester Park
Lakeside
Lakewood
University
Lincoln Park
Spirit Valley

As unofficial neighborhoods.

You will probably find it is difficult to find a place that accepts pets. When I was still living up there and had my cats, it was extremely difficult to find anything. I say try to contact a realtor that has info on rentals. Here's one: Homes for Sale Duluth MN - Duluth Minnesota Real Estate - Messina & Associates Also look at Proctor - it's right next to Duluth and also would have easy freeway access. Not too bad of a little town either.

West Duluth is only seen as "bad" if you have never lived outside of Duluth. Its fairly gritty and run down in some parts but its not dangerous.

I often have to go to Central Ave near Ramsey Village, and you could find worse neighborhoods, like I said. Like a previous post said, Duluth is five miles wide and 28 miles long. It is built along a 600-800 ft bluff clingning to the edge of lake superior.

So you will find that directions are a bit goofy here such as "up the hill" describes anything by the mall area and a few neighborhoods like Piedmont. You could try looking there for houses as you will be close to 53 north and I-35. It is close to shopping, Lake Superior College, and you can easily cut across town by being on top of the hill.

Lakeside, Congdon, and London Road areas are also right off the freeway and could have rentals too. (why are you looking for freeway access?) BTW, there is no traffic trouble in Duluth and you can get around just fine without needing to be right off the freeway.

Try Edina Realty or Edmunds Realty for rental properties. Bowman Properties is also a local company for rentals.

I agree; however, I think looking at other options makes sense too since you may find something else you like better. Like I said - the pet thing will limit you but still look around a little more to make sure.
