They are only similar in that they are luxuries. Nicotine is a proven carcinogen and directly linked with many health problems. Coffee, and caffeine, on the other hand are not a proven health issue. Early studies that showed health risks with caffeine have largely been disproven. Caffeine in moderate use has no negative effects. In fact caffeine has many positive qualities.

But as said already - smokers are an easy tax target because tobacco is "bad."

The government is hungry for tax revenue though. Who knows what they might choose to tax next? As a non-smoker it is easy for me to not be annoyed by cigarette taxes. But I don't like lifestyle taxes much in general. It is the government once again, trying to influence the behavior of its citizens.

As a society, we need to discourage smoking. This is one way to do it.

Could you post a link to show it is a carcinogen? Thanks.

I'm not saying it's good for you. But I've never heard of nicotine causing cancer. It's all the other compounds that do that.
Otherwise, the patch would cause cancer. Eh?

Is nicotine carcinogenic? | Answerbag

When the cig taxes started getting too high................

1. Stopped giving money to charities.

2. Cancelled all magazine subscriptions.

3. Vote NO on all school, polices levies, etc.

4. The more I have to pay for cigs, the less I will spend on other things that aren't essential, like movies, eating out, jewelery, clothes I don't really need, gift giving, etc.
