What I mean is, when there was news coming out about the solid manufacturing numbers, inventory, consumption, etc. it those who mentioned it were dismissed as sheeple who believe that tripe since the major media outlets were simply there to spin things positively. If we have same type media source reporting bad economic news what could have happened?

Or do we now tighten the rules to say we only believe whatever microblog doomsday site we like but we're allowed to acknowledge major media outlets if it's bad news?
I've been reading the Financial Sense site articles for some number of years now. They are not just doom and gloom and some called the upswing correctly. The ag commodity guy who posts there has been pretty spot on as I started following some of his picks..wheat did go down and oats skyrocketed.

MSM has a much wider audience with many not astute in finance/wall street/market trends. Confidence is a major factor when dealing with the masses. Use your own judgement by just looking back 2-3 years.
Schiff and Roubini were lambasted; Roubini was called delusional while Cramer was worshipped.

Follow who you want to follow but do your homework and decide for yourself.
The ones that "never saw it coming" are still talking of recovery and green shoots. (MSM)
The ones that did warn post on alternate sites.
