We used to have a CHASE BANK,now it is closed and the ATM machine is not working.
But owning a bank account can cost you these days if you dont keep a certain balance in the account,I THINk the fee with Chase is $6 per month.
And there is a limit of 6 free withdrawals with your saving account.per month.
But one can survive without a bank account, you can pay your utility bills at supermarket, but money order as well.
how often do we need cash or write a check?
we can use either our cc or debit card

My finances are way too complicated to NOT have a bank account.

Here too. There are no nursing homes or assisted living. Children know from day 1 that they will have to take care of their parents at some point and prepare for that.

What I haven't figured out is what if they have dementia or some other debilitating condition beyond a layman's capability.

As a senior, it's nice to live where the older folks are respected.

As far as bank accounts, I don't know how you live without one. Always had one (or 2). In the U.S. yes. I figure our money is safer there....

Our caretaker/gardener is paid in cash as are most laborers so they don't really need one, living hand-to-mouth. Checks are not a thing..

I've had a bank account since I was 18. My son, 17, just started working late last year and he opened a bank account and he's been saving some pretty good money. You can never start too early, IMHO!

some banks stop accepting endorsed checks.

sad but true, why bother to put the cash in the bank account when it will be gone soon-pay rent, car, utilities, grocery, gas.and have some change for a beer

ATM not ATM Machine

Debit cards are really bad as far as protection goes. If you're disciplined and can pay your cc balance off each month they're so much better.

A huge number of people can no longer get checking accounts because they are flagged in Chexsystems.

I'm with a local/semi-regional credit union which allows me to use certain ATMs surcharge-free throughout the country.
