That is ridiculous to say a person should have to perform community service for unemployment!!!!!!! It's like you are trying to punish people for something they have NO control over. I personally receive ALOT less than when I was working so I get no benefit out of it besides paying my mortgage and a few utilities but I am grateful and blessed to have it. It is no fun trying to manage with alot less. I've only been getting benefits for 3 months and I pray I get a phone call for a job next week. I would be happy to let these benefits go.......

You never know when I could be you....Be grateful and appreciative of your current situation because you never know if you will be in mine....
i think most of us know many many people who are just milking the system...i cant speak for where you are but i see help wanted signs all over the place lately for lower level jobs . if they truely want to get off unemployment id guess and say most could find at least something to do. . i was un-employed this year 2x and found work both times.

i lost track of all the people i met who are on unemployment insurance because they can be,... im not saying its true of all but its certainly true of enough.

my buddy is an un-employed electrician... instead of un-employment he came up with just going out to businesses and hitting the push to test button on their emergency lighting before the fire department does it and gives them a violation. if it dosnt work he sells them a bulb or battery. he is now earning a nice living....not all but most folks can find things to do if they really put their mind to it. there are certainly enough cans, old batteries ,computer monitors etc out there if push came to shove and start a little recycling business.

the fact is alot of people do just those kind of things but they also dont give up their un-employment or report their income. imagine if you could count the number of people milking the welfare system here in nyc alone.. we could probley pay off the national debt.

yes their are people who truely cant find a job and for them i feel sorry but the fact is the system lends its self much to easily to freeloaders and needs to find ways to reduce it. .

I havent worked much in months & i dont get unemployment. I finally found a weekend job that pays min wage & i only get 8-10 hrs per weekend. It sucks but that will at least cover 1/2 my rent. Ill look for other work for the weekdays. I have asked for help from relatives & a few friends but they said no.

I live alone & pay rent, utilities (incl city fees), auto ins, car maintainance & i care for 5 cats (4 are seniors). I was in a auto accident (not my fault) almost 2 yrs ago & the hartford ins co screwed me big time. If i ever ran into the ins adjuster from the hartford who handled the claim i would punch him in the damn mouth.

Anyways....i pay my own way & i despise freeloaders. I know a guy who has alot of lazy, freeloading relatives & i told him NEVER to bring them over here (we have a pool & rec room in the park). My step mom + dad are "comfortable" but they wouldnt help me out if i was living in a box under a old bridge that could collapse at any time.

if you think about it ,if your being paid by the tax payors and on un-employment is it so terrible if the tax payors want a few hours of work a week for the money being paid out.? i dont think so

Ouch. I've found that 90% of a pet's expenses are in the last 10% of it's life.

Good luck, I hope everything works out for you.

It isn't insensitive, it's just common sense.

And it is ridiculous because you don't like the idea, or because the concept is foreign to you?

But you do have control, you simply refused to exercise any control or take responsibility.

Yet another stellar outstanding great example is GE's closure of its manufacturing plants that make light-bulbs.

The handwriting was on the wall 3 years ago when the law was enacted. How many employees enrolled in an education program to learn a new career or to gain more expertise in the field they're already in?

None. They had plenty of time visit porno sites on the web and down-load all kinds of useless garbage and stare at the TV, but in that 3 year period the couldn't take 5 lousy minutes to do some research about laws that might affect them or goings-on in their industry.

Hey, I'll hold your hand and walk you through every minute of your life so you don't screw up, but you're going to have to blow sunshine up my ass.

Well, you see, that's the thing. You do not pay unemployment tax to the state or to the pseudo-federal government. Your employer paid those for you on your behalf.

Now, if your employer had given you that money in lieu of paying those benefits for you, then you would have squandered it faster than you could earn it, and then you'd be unemployed with ZERO benefits.

Did you take out a separate unemployment insurance policy in your name? No, because it didn't matter to you and you were deluded into thinking the government will save you.

Why?

Is that another idea you don't like, or is it just another foreign concept?

But that isn't true.

Smart people take responsibility and search the web for new laws and regulations that could negatively impact their industry and the seek answers, and they plan and prepare.

There's a guy here on this forum that took advantage of employer paid training because they had been warned. Only he and another did that, and now they have jobs and their 400+odd co-workers have none.

I guess it would be totally pointless to ask why you didn't have 6 months of living expenses saved up in the bank.

So, tell us, was it worth it to have cell-phone and cable all that time?

That money would come in real handy right about now.

Yup! Saving city government money in the process.

Maybe the unemployed could come to your place of business and do your job gratis and your employer could contribute $20 a day towards an unemployment compensation fund? I'm sure your employer would be thrilled at the savings.
Nah my job doesn't lend itself well to frequent turnover, most don't. I'm talking simple labor.

Be Happy 2 - I don't believe it is meant to be punitive, it is meant to get something in return for the paychecks the government is sending out, as well as motivate the occasional unmotivated job seeker.

Good luck with your job search.

The unemployment system penalizes people who work part time and/or take temporary jobs. I took a long term temp job, which reduced my unemployment a great deal due to becoming eligible for a new claim. This would have happened if I worked in a part time position was well.

Temping was also a gamble because if the temp agency did not sign that they did not have any more work for me, then I could have lost my unemployment.

I did finally get a good full time job, in my industry. If I had taken a job at Taco Bell, then I would not have found the great job I have now.
