Can businesses afford to keep paying the rapidly rising bill? A friend of mine had his unemployment bill more than double between the first quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011.

Went from $12,000 to $28,000/quarter.

Wall Street got all the money they asked for. The rest got a big FkU.

Business owners may feel like this government is trying to drive them out of business. Then Obama wonders why they are not investing in Amerikka.

I believe that Unemployment Insurance is paid by companies to the State, not Federal, and is limited by percent by state. The max for California is 6.2%. Each company will have a different percent based on their history with using the unemployment, and is updated each year.
So if a company previously had a really good record (low percentage), but then made huge layoffs the rate could jump up quite a bit. It may not be the same for other states, but is it possible that your friends company had laid off a bunch of employees?

Trucking company so layoffs are quite possible. I have never collected or paid for unemployment to my knowledge. I know little about it.

Just repeating what I heard.

It's a state level program for primary unemployment benefits. And a lot of states were able to keep premiums artificially low during times of 5% or less unemployment. Since it's supposed to be a self-funding program, it really is no surprise to see premiums increase when they need to keep up with increased demand for the benefits.

Something rubs me the wrong way to hear about some guy who saved a butt load of money laying off workers, complaining that his unemployment premiums went up.

If it were General Electric, would it be any different?

Especially the "Obama . . . . . " part?

Such is the nature of politics.

Yes, GE would get Federal Funding, Tax Credits and Grants for taking the jobs overseas, and shipping the products back into the US as various products that get (again) Federal Funding, Tax Credits and Grants.

Once again, class, Leona Helmsley stated it correctly -- Only the Little People Pay Taxes.

Dunno what is SO hard to follow about this?

Actually I think he grew. Premiums have increased. A lot. If you pay 5% for insurance and you grow, then then you pay more.

The truth is dangerous. I hope you aren't on the air. Might get pulled.
