The UK scenario is exactly what most comes to mind for our future: higher costs, higher taxes, lower wages, lower living standards.

If we are to survive these tumultuous times, we are going to have to change our way of thinking and adapt to the "New American Dream"! Define success for yourself... love your family and help your fellow neighbor!

You are right, of course. But in your rather simplistic view (that does not mean unintelligent, but just "less than comprehensive") you do not take into account that Americans are not educated in, nor do we have any inherent know-how or street smarts, when it comes to organizing around real hardcore political issues. We elect our legislators based on flimsy evidence, and no candidates are that great anyway. Look at how many had high hopes for our current pres and other legislators who were "truly gonna make a difference." All it ever is, no matter who is elected, is business as usual...catering to the powerful interests and lobbyists, on with the corporate bailouts and handouts moments after being sworn in, promising the populace this and delivering that. A very great number of people (at least where I live) were not hiding behind the TV these past few years, they have been out working very hard to make change in this country and all we get is the same thing in another costume. I don't see how for those working for real change "got what they deserved."

Absolutely NEG. Washington DC shouldn't be so worried about what the little guy is doing but focus on the big business and Wall Street. They've been running amok for decades ... getting richer and more powerful, in the process. Essentially, squeezing the life out of the little people (like me).

Seems like the only people who didn't suffer in the real estate fiasco were the ones who bought their home before the boom, paid cash or financed it with a fixed-rate mortgage, didn't lose their job and had no investments in the stock market. I'll let you know when I meet someone who didn't have one of those things happen to them.
