You guys are too sharp! I just realized this thread would have been much more fun if I had posted it in the Politics forum! Can you imagine the answers if you added political goverment budget logic to the riddle.

The defect in the OP is that it asks "Where is the missing dollar", when in fact there is no missing dollar.
The misstated line is the one where it adds the bellboy's $2 to the $27 that the men paid for the room (they paid only $25 for the room). The men are out of pocket $27, which includes the $2 that the bellboy kept. Plus the $25 paid to the manager. 25+2=27.

And don't forget, if you subtract 5 from 30 you now have 35.
