Where did this 55mph number come from? Why not 60 or 50? And why do people think every car on the market is most efficient at highway speeds at 55mph? Have the proponents of the 55mph limit considered the adverse impact of this limit? Or are they just capable of this singular thought?
The proponents of the 55 limit were the insurance companies and law enforcement who both benefitted fianancially by keeping speed limits underposted (revenue generation).

That leads into critique of those who support the 55mph limit. No one can state what science and methodology is behind this speed. It is a number pulled up and supporters jump on the bandwagon without a thought as to why that number, and not another one.

Lots of good arguments against. I had not even considered that engineering had improved a car's emissions, mileage, etc.
Back when it was originally passed there was a lot of criticism of the move but I think I was too young to have an opinion and certainly too young to have voted for anyone involved in the creation of it.

If they really wanted safe and efficient why not just make it 20mph and enforce it tightly? Almost no one would die and cars would get amazing mileage because half the time they could just coast along.
Speed limits are creations made to give police a chance to write tickets. People have been repeatedly proven to drive as fast as they are comfortable with very few giving any real consideration to posted speed limits.
They proved once before that they had the right. Who's to say they won't try it again?
The federal government does not have the right. What they did was withold federal highway funding from states which would not comply.
