Regardless of the maximum posted speed limit, you do not have to drive at that speed. Remember, slower traffic keep right. It sounds like some people have ego problems if they get passed by a faster vehicle.
I already drive speed limit in the slow lane, and even that isn't fast enough to not be tailgated. Going slower isn't safe.

Anything wrong with having a national speed limit of, say, 75 mph when most people already go that fast?

I drove faster than that when the speed limit was 55.

No, life is to short to spend it getting to your destination.

Modern cars and trucks get better millage than those made before the early 80's and some get the best millage around 65mph some even higher with the addition of gear boxes with 6 speeds or more and better aerodynamics..

what deregulation of Ronny-ray-gun are you speaking of?
You do know about oil speculation on the stock market and that it has more control over what you pay than OPEC does.
