This is by far the easiest country to make a living and build wealth. Anyone can do so if they choose. The problem is that politicians are so hell bent on winning elections that they have created an entire generation of whiny, non innovative bums. There are exceptions.

Unless you are mentally ill or have some type of disability, there is no excuse for being a loser in this country. Do you not think it is degrading that Government thinks it knows whats best for you better than yourself? If not, that explains it. If society would quit making everyone victims because things are not laid out on a silver platter, we would be a lot better off.

Love this. Likely never lived in other social systems. Take it from a guy who did, and went through exile and all kinds of social and political perturbations. You are wrong. You see what you want to see, as you are likely being cuddled in some sweet honey hole and not bitten by life for too long.
You know what they say - truth speaks through the lips of a child. Or an artist. Their sensitive nature opens them to the subconscious perception of reality as it is.

When one contemplates CEO's of military mercenary contractors salaries supported by tax payer dollars in the billions it becomes clear that Eisenhower's warning has breached multifold. Our forefather's could not have even thought such a scam possible under the guise portrayed as capitalism. If no more American industry to support the working class, and our childrens futures being stolen by the greedy is what capitalism is then maybe we should consider a different system? Otherwise, something should be done to stop this theft of taxpayer supported by our politicians of both parties!

You are part of America's problem.
Believe it or not, studies have been done that show that in Western Europe, people at the lower parts of the income scale actually have a better mobility going up the ladder now than in America.

The way many people view capitalism is as a cult. The idea that it can solve all the problems of the world if simply deregulated, for instance. Problem is that capitalism and socialism and democracy are all constructs of humans and as such are always doomed to excess, greed and flaws. People can find a way to corrupt or abuse any system, social or economic. Inherently, none of these systems is evil, corrupt or flawed. They are simply tools that can be wielded efficiently or twisted to suit the needs of those in control.

Every society has aspects of socialism. If the USA were to abandon those at the lower rungs of society, we would quickly become a nation of even deeper economic divide, The haves and the have nots. A huge segment of society starving in the streets without hope. We tolerate a certain amount of waste and theft within the system, in order to prevent our society from falling into despair and choas.

The idea that if left to suffer and starve all those who benefit from social programs would step up and become productive is inane and naive. There is only so much to go around and there are plenty of children and elderly and disabled people who will never be able to "compete" as some of you put it. In order to protect them , we tolerate some systemic abuse. It is the humane and honorable thing to do.

Look at third world countries, and countries like India and Pakistan, where sizable segments of society are left to suffer and scrounge and starve. Why don't all those people just "pull themselves up by their boot straps", if abandoning them is all the incentive they need to better themselves? Instead, those countries are unstable and prone to violent revolution and sudden changes of regime which threaten the very fabric of society.

Imagine where we would be today if not for Medicare and Social Security, which have both been derided as "socialism". My guess, is we would look a lot more like India and a lot less like some capitalist utopia.

The "American Dream" is not a result of capitalism alone. This country is a vast source of land and natural resources. We sit atop a bounty of wealth, from farm land to minerals and energy. Is it capitalism that made Saudi Arabia wealthy or luck of the draw?

When deriding social programs, consider the following:

"American history was always filled with the assumption that upward mobility was possible. The Midwest and West opened land that could be exploited, and the massive industrialization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries opened opportunities. There was a systemic expectation of upward mobility built into American culture and reality. The Great Depression was a shock to the system, and it wasn't solved by the New Deal, nor even by World War II alone. The next drive for upward mobility came from post-war programs for veterans, of whom there were more than 10 million. These programs were instrumental in creating post-industrial America, by creating a class of suburban professionals. There were three programs that were critical:
  1. The GI Bill, which allowed veterans to go to college after the war, becoming professionals frequently several notches above their parents.
  2. The part of the GI Bill that provided federally guaranteed mortgages to veterans, allowing low and no down payment mortgages and low interest rates to graduates of publicly funded universities.
  3. The federally funded Interstate Highway System, which made access to land close to but outside of cities easier, enabling both the dispersal of populations on inexpensive land (which made single-family houses possible) and, later, the dispersal of business to the suburbs.
There were undoubtedly many other things that contributed to this, but these three not only reshaped America but also created a new dimension to the upward mobility that was built into American life from the beginning. Moreover, these programs were all directed toward veterans, to whom it was acknowledged a debt was due, or were created for military reasons (the Interstate Highway System was funded to enable the rapid movement of troops from coast to coast, which during World War II was found to be impossible). As a result, there was consensus around the moral propriety of the programs."

The last sentence. The Fox is in charge of the Hen house. Wall Street is writing the laws....
