I noticed some of my cards have one of the four digit numbers the same as another. Is this coincidence or are they assigned from some cryptic algorithm? I realize the exact formula must be classified, but it must be more involved than some random combination from the block of numbers each issuer has.

The first four to six digits are an identifier for the issuing bank.

Master Cards start with 5's and Visa Cards with 4's.
