The only difference is that you get credit for any sales taxes you paid to the other state. With an online purchase, you don't get this credit and must pay your state the entire tax rate.

For example, if you live in Colorado, you are required to pay Colorado 2.9% in taxes on all online purchases.

B&M stores have more overhead. As a result, they charge you more.

What's ruined states is their inability to live within their means. An Internet sales tax will simply permit these states to continue on spending without addressing the issues that got them in trouble.

With a click of a mouse I can find anything I am looking for within a matter of seconds. I don't have to take the time and energy running from store to store looking for the size, color or number I want. The down side to this is that I have to pay shipping and wait up to a week for the product to arrive. The states are just pissed because they feel they are losing sales tax money.

Recently I ordered a car accessory from a company in Washington state on the web. Ohio believes they are entitled to the sales tax that would have been generated if I bought the item here in Ohio. I say BS, if I drove to Washington state to purchase the same item they have no claim to the tax. If anyone should get the sales tax it should be Washington not Ohio. I am curious to see how far this gets in the House where their whole stance has been "NO NEW TAXES". Will they continue that stance or become even bigger hypocrites.

You can't say Ohio without thinking of taxes. I know I live here!

Since 1936, Ohio has required you to pay tax on any items purchased out of state. However, they will credit you any amount you have already paid to another state for that purchase. Since you didn't pay taxes to Washington state, you are entitled to pay all 5.5% to Ohio. That's the current law.
