all states are about the same eventually if they are not there yet.

since rates increases are governed by the states insurance board the time to get to these levels vary.

here in ny many carriers had rate increases denied or far smaller than what they wanted.. i think 3 years in a row they were slashed then approved for a monster hike.

the national average is over 15k for a couple, don't doubt it..
Not really because different areas have different cost on providers. just has medeicare pays differently based on that. Its kind of like cost of anything else like offices etc.One reason their will be state exchanges that setup insurance and you will not be able to buy across state lines.

A fellow I work with retired. He was paying $300/mo (90/10), but after retirement his wife was no longer subsidized. His premium rose to $1100/mo.

So, $3600 annually on employer subsidized coverage and $13,200 annually with only himself subsidized.
Both around 62. This suggests that the true cost of the policy was $800/mo each and the company was paying $650/mo for each of them.

If you are younger, much cheaper.
If you take more risk (higher co-pay, deductible, out-of-pocket max) , much cheaper.

Without knowing details like age, location, coverage level, the premium itself is hard to construe.

I am covered as en employee. My wife also works at the hospital but opted out because I have the insurance and since we allready have more than 2 dependends it didn't make sence. She gets paid $2 an hour more for opting out. For us it cost so much for one dependend and twice as much for 2 or more dependents. We pay $122 a pay period for the 2 of us and 6 kids, that is for medical, dental, and vision. Comes out to $3,172 a year.

Health insurance is with a PPO that the healthcare organization offers to all employees. As long as we use our hospital the cost is low in house. Outside of the area hospital are paid at a 80% rate. (In house is 100% with a $100 deductible for the year, $400 a year for the family.) If we use our ER it cost $100 but we can go to one of our off site clinics and it will cost us $25 for the visit. Three of the clinics have Urgent care units attatched to them so that is not too bad of deal. A lot of the Doctors in our Medical office building will also wave our portion if we use them, costing us little for their services.

Vision offers a check up once each year with lens change if needed. New glasses every other year.

Yes, no kidding. I mean we do not pay any weekly/monthly fees or deductibles.
