Please help me in figuring out which internship to choose:

-Investment Banking internship at a large firm, where I'll learn all the different aspects of IB, shadow my mentor, sit in on meetings, take trips to headquarters and much more. I'll be exposed to all the different positions, to see which best fits my interest.

OR

-Northwestern Mutual's Financial Representative Internship (Insurance & Mutual Bonds).

Which would be better to have (experience wise) on your resume and which is the better job period? Additionally, which would you choose and why?

If I were you, I wouldn't even consider this as a question, and I would go the IB route, as that's what I want to do with my career, and I wasn't able to get an internship when I was in college.

But, since this is you, and not me, what do you want to do with your life? Do you want to do IB/PE/HF or do you want to do financial planning?

Answer that question and you have your answer.

Or you can do the northwestern route, and then I'll do the IB internship

yeah .... seems like a no-brainer to me unless you are really drawn to selling financial products

You pretty much laid out the IB one and for me that would have been preferable

NWM is a planning and advice company - which basically means they look to consult and sell financial products to people .... as an intern, that is what you'll be doing .... you'll have to pass a couple exams to get the proper license and then you'll work with someone upstream to sell financial products to your network (basically you'll tap into your family and friends, solicit leads from them to call and then cold call people that carry an affiliation with you - be it alumni, fraternity, club, etc) ........ it can be very lucrative and can help build up sales skills, gain confidence, etc.

However, it's an industry that pretty much feeds itself .... it's a sales job with a knowledge of certain financial products (mainly life insurance) that can put you on a path to do that for your career or work in associated industries like an insurance broker or underwriter.

You typically don't need to intern or network into those positions - if you are solid enough to get into an internship program you'll find a company willing to take a gamble on you ...... it's a high burn industry

IB is a lot tougher to get into and if you have an opportunity to learn it with a well regarded field, IMO that will look stronger on your resume and potentially open up a harder to walk path

My question is why would an IB firm offer an internship to a person who has trouble making this type of decision?

Go with NWM, you'll be in way over your head in IB (well, maybe not as an intern where all you have to do is sit there and look pretty).

Suspect there is more to this story and "choosing" isn't really what's going on.

Honestly it doesn't really matter, as long as you have a good experience. By this I mean, don't ruin your summer or free time with a hellish internship that is just miserable. They key is to learn as much as you can, stay as long as you can, be flexible with your hours, even ask them if you can work as little as 5 hours a week just to keep the name on your resume with the longest time period there. Sure you can do 3 months of 40 hour work weeks, but who even knows if you worked 9 months (6 of which you were only working 15 hours a week, nobody knows on your resume!) Keep in touch with people. Network. My extremely professional. Treat it as a long interview. If they like you, and you are not an idiot, they'll probably hire you full-time in the future.

Lasty, get on linkedin and start building your profile. Connect with everyone. Build relationships. Build your credibility. Make people know who you are and what your skills are.

Not for nothing .... but it's going to be hard to network and build connections when you are looking to work short weeks ... for most serious financial companies that would be a sure fire way to burn bridges

You have that right ... The guy you are shadowing works 7 am - 11 pm and an intern wants to leave early. That is not going to get you much of a recommendation.

That's right rawkdude1,

for 3-6 months its better to take an internship that you will enjoy rather than whine about for the next 6 months. Go for the internship you have more interest in!

I just completed an internship in Shanghai in a small business administration company where I learnt a lot. In China and particularly in Shanghai right now employers are scouting out talented individuals to join their companies. I learnt a lot, learnt about a new culture and most of all, had a load of fun!

I was lucky enough to have found MIG (Your Internship in Shanghai) just a couple months before my Summer vacation started. I applied for a job through them, and they helped me without hesitation. I was more than happy to pay the small fee they charged because they were so professional and so helpful with all my problems.

Hope that helps,

Maria

Does either internship pay? Recent studies have shown non paying internships put you at a disadvantage.
