I don't understand why people keep playing NY's sweet million lottery game where the jackpot was last won on May 9th 2013. Since then nobody has won yet. Thats doesn't make sense at all.

When you consider the odds, no gambling makes sense.

Maybe they figure that since no one has won recently, their odds of winning are higher.

Just guessing...

Tickets cost $1, odds are 1 in 3.838 million....... So it is like a scratch ticket, the jackpot is out there but they may not sell 3.8 million tickets every week so they may lose money if a few winners collect in a short period.

MegaMillions is the same price, odds are long 1 in 175 million so despite the higher jackpot the odds are significantly higher!

Not if you're "lucky".

(In the mind of a gambler.)

I made some math calculation and figured out that they sell around 300 thousand tickets each draw. Approximately they pay out 60 Grands each drawing. So the profit they make each week is a half a million dollars!!!

I am not mad at a lottery organizators who clearly making too much profits on so called "gamblers". The Sweet million players should make a boycott.

Purchasing a lottery ticket has nothing to do with one logically thinking that he/she is going to win. It has much more to do with the brief feeling/delusion of hope that one gets starting with the purchase of the ticket and ending when the ticket proves to not be a winner.

You can equate it to the brief feeling of "hope" that Obama voters had when they cast their votes.

A delusion so captivating that one forces him/herself to believe it.
