I read that American companies have monopoly on AIDS medications. Do they have monopoly on producing them in the USA, and agreements for selling them in Africa? What is meant by monopoly? Thanks
It generally means that a particular drug company put in the millions of dollars and years of research, testing and drug trials to bring the drug to market. Then they have a patent on the drug formula for a certain number of years so they can recoup their investment.
This is why you'll see a certain drug--like for allergies--for a number of years then suddenly you can get a generic of the drug, because the patent expired.
It's not a monopoly. Any drug company in any country could do the same thing.
So they don't have a monopoly on delivering AIDS medications to Africa, or selling it there? Does this patent on the drug count worldwide, or just in America? Thanks
