Two-week vacation in Europe is very expensive, really outside my budget. I'd likewise love to live abroad again.
Baloney!
(Disclaimer: you'll need to use credit card or frequent flyer awards, stay in hostels or cheap hotels, eat like locals, use public transportation, etc.)
Yeah, if you've got the flight paid for by a rich uncle, it's not too bad. Personally, I never seem to accumulate that amount of points. I have a hotel card (SPG) since it's a better total return, so I'll never accumulate that 100,000 "miles" necessary to circle the globe roughly four times... or fly to Europe and back with a $200 surcharge once, leaving me always wondering where my other 90,000 or so miles went and why I had to spend $200 of my own money. =D

I accumulated over 100,000 points with United and Chase (transferable to United) in the last 6 months by taking on multiple credit card sign-in offers.. you know those where you spend $1000 - 5000 in the first 3 months to get 30K to 50K points (then cancel once you're done.)
Didn't need to spend extra money (except maybe $50 total in transaction fees for buying gift cards.) I was even able to fund another checking account (with AMEX Bluebird) and used that account to pay rent which effectively meant paying rent with a new credit card to meet its "spend $2000 in the first 3 months and earn 40,000 points" requirements.
Strategically using these sign-in bonuses is like receiving 10+ points for every dollar you spent (as opposed to the normal rate of 1 or 2 points per dollar.)
However---I will admit that personal letters from friends and family over the years (back when people actually put pen to paper) are treasures to me. But, whenever I read them, it isn't the actual letters I value--but the memories and experiences of that friendship or kinship those letters represent.
Peace.
Well said -- I agree.
