I don't know how so many people with children are making it (wage, $40k)

Heres what I did. I never had children, let my siblings replicate my genes. I got off scot free, don't have to pay the 100s of thousands to raise and educate one, my 'playpen' is not messed up (stretched). I get to borrow them for whiles and then give them back when their manners wear off. I do whatever I want with my money. I highly recommend it. Let your siblings raise your genetic kids. Its great.
I agree. I would rather have rich folks reproduce than poor people. Poor people force their poverty on their children, their drug and criminal issues, and all sorts of social ills on their kids.
Sometimes I think a lot of financially poor people make birthing children their "heavenly" purpose here on earth. Perhaps they feel as though the most important thing they can do or contribute to society is adding another person. When you're at the bottom of the totem poll in almost every facet of life, having the important job of being a parent can validate one's reason for existence and make them feel irreplaceable (which they sort of are for their child).

"heavenly" purpose on earth? Rubbish. Contribute to society? How do you figure? You know what happens to these kids? They end up in foster homes, then juvie centers then prison/homelessness. I live in New York City and I can't even turn on the news anymore. Kids are walking over the Mexico-U.S. border in droves while a mother just left a toddler in a stroller on a subway platform. Don't you watch the news or look at the papers? She was arrested and will be charged. Her excuse? She was under a lot of stress and couldn't take care of the little girl. Really? Another single mother who wouldn't go to Planned Parenthood and get contraception. How many of these babies are dumped in the trash every year? Some of these people actually have kids to get on welfare and section 8. Others, they're not only poor but also really stupid. Usually stupid and poor goes hand in hand.
The jobs in this area being posted are by and large not offering more than 30k/year for the vast majority (like 80-90 percent).
I don't know how people are getting by out there. Day care, food, etc costs etc.. How are you doing it?
How are we doing it? It's really quite simple. Our household income was and remains a whole heck of a lot more than $30k/yr., and we've been blessedly free of health & property disasters that might have destroyed our family's financial well-being.

I can't say they are all great or even good parents. I don't know about the foster/juvie/prison stuff - I see a lot of poor people in the south and most of their kids turn out just being regular working class people like their parents. All I'm saying is that some people may romanticize the parent role because it's a way for them to feel success/accomplishment.
I make $50k and though I have all my needs met, I could certainly use more, and wouldn't have kids unless I had a 100k HHI, and I live in a reasonably low COL area.
I know quite a few dual income families making less than I do with a kid or more kids. It is scary.
I know a family with five kids with your income in small town Midwest. At that point, one parent has to stay home.

I am really glad you didn't have children. Hopefully the genes of your siblings are at least ever so slightly kinder and more substantial than yours.
It is pathetic that college grads should be thankful to get $40K a year. That is less than $20 an hour. At the same time they want people who can move their arms get paid $15 an hour. This shows where we are headed.
I can empathize with LWH's point. I'll add that 75% of Americans who have kids, shouldn't.
