I have a 20 year old second vehicle to sell. I use public transit every day now, and I no longer need a second vehicle as a back up. The value of this well-maintained car is anywhere from $800 to $2200 based on local car market for comparable models/sizes/mileage/condition available. $800 cars have some issues, but mine does not. $2200 is the average high list prices, but they probably will sell for only $1800-$1900.

I don't have the time or energy to sell my car. I'm willing to have someone else sell it for a commission.

To sell my car, I'm thinking of giving a 20% commission. But the difference between $1250 sale price and a $1500 sale price is only $50 in commission. The salesperson could be willing to get rid of the car for $1250 just to make a $250 commission quickly rather than hold out for $1500 for me.

Maybe I should make $1200 the basic commission ($240), and then offer 50% commission for amounts over $1200. Thoughts on this?

For payment: the buyer would need to bring cash to my bank to buy a cashier's check. They'd have a the stub as record of payment. Then I'd sign the papers & title & bill of sale, and hand over the keys to the car. I'd then purchase a cashier's check for the seller's commission.

How would you structure a sales incentive plan for having someone else sell your used car?

I'd just take it to CarMax or something.

If you want to pay someone why not just structure it so you give them X amount of money rather than a percentage commission? I feel like you are putting too much thought into a simple situation. Offer whoever $200 to make this go away since YOU don't want to deal with it. If your goal is to maximize your profit you should do it yourself I think?

Nobody is going to bother to do anything for $200. Given that your car is only worth $1500 I'm going to go out on a limb and say BS to your not having enough time to sell it. "Don't have the energy" I believe that 100%. Take it to a used car dealer. You're not going to find anyone who really cares about a car that cheap.
