Most marketing is intendedmuch a not to trick you but rather to appeal to you. For many $9.99 has and still is more appealing than $10.00. Proctor and Gamble offers many competing products. One major reason is that if you are of moderate income and your kid uses a P@G diaper, they have a higher priced one because a wealthier person doesn't want the same diaper that you use on their kids butt. Same way with Gain and Tide both P@G with Tide being more expensive and check out the Consumer Reports ratings of detergents.
Back in my misguided youth I was disillusioned when a walk down the detergent aisle revealed to me that pretty much all the brands were from three manufacturers.
I see $1.97, I think, "two bucks". $98.99 becomes "100 bucks". That's if I'm paying cash, which I do on the vast majority of transactions. Cheque and debit are a different story, where you have to be exact. It's annoying as hell, which is why I rarely use cheques or debit.
You can train yourself to read prices that way, rendering decades of psychological pricing crap totally worthless. It's not difficult.
By the way, what are they going to do when they finally remove the penny from circulation? Allah forbid companies should actually round prices up to the nearest dollar! (gasp)

In 2012, they stopped producing the Canadian penny to be gradually phased out of circulation. A rumour was circulating (no pun intended) that they would no longer air "The Big Bang Theory" in Canada due to the elimination of the Penny; fortunately, that did not happen.
I see 3.70. I'm not going to argue with someone over the prices they set, because they're not going to change them.
I don't think you can prove such a thing. It's like I said before, people aren't eating at McDonalds, because it's 99c vs 1. They're eating there, mostly, because they can't afford to eat other places. It's not marketing or advertising. There's too many external factors to say someone choice something do to advertising/marketing.
1) good for you. Sincerely
2) you are wrong in your conclusion. History proves it. Psych 1 proved it. All the studies have been done, and those date back into the 40's and 50's. We are programmed that way
So congratulations to you for breaking out if Plato's cave. You are truly liberated.
Most people, including I , I am sad to admit, I remain in chains around that fire, looking a shadows on the wall.
I have an ex girlfriend who would say "Its on sale for $9!". Come to find out its on sale for $9.99. In my mind that is at least $10 after tax. It used to irk me beyond belief when she would do that!
This was started many years ago by J.C. Penney, this was so employees would have to open the register and give change back to customers and not put the money in their own pockets.

I think you mean unfortunately.
