I have been searching for median Net Worth statistics for individuals. Looks like values varies a lot depending on the source:

For Individuals
Nasdaq - $38.7K
CNN - $45K

For Households:
New York Times - $56K
USA Today - $81.2K
Stanford - $88K

Which of these numbers look accurate for individual and for households?

Also, honestly the median net worth looks low compared to average net worth.

none are really accurate , there is no standardized financial survey that polls all americans. for whatever reason the census has no personal financial information in it. there is a seperate small survey sent out that polls a relatively small group of americans and trys to guess what we all have.

Your Stanford number is incorrect. They claim around $56K for 2013. The Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report has the median wealth listed at around $38K for 2012.

Yeah, unfortunately there is no data on individual net worth, income, and the like, only household. Makes it a lot harder to tell how, as a single person, I am doing compared to the average individual.

every household is guessed at with sparse random samples.

heck i doubt you could even come up with an accurate guess in my own neighborhood based on a few random samples.

There's no way they can accurately guess. My neighbor is in a home worth about $500,000 but with a mortgage and a equity line of credit up to nearly 80% of that, has two old beater cars, makes about $130k I'm sure they would guess his net worth was a lot higher than it is. I know another guy that has millions in investments but lives in a modest double-wide in a lower income area, so the same problem. When it comes to polls, people are going to exaggerate or refuse to answer, leaving the pollsters with an invalid, not random sample.

How data is accumulated is the question.

I have noticed that CNN does not always list it's sources for number and many times after flashy headline their source is "Experts say".

I share this frustration.

I'm okay not knowing how the average is doing as it's highly irrelevant to my plan or my retirement. As long as my wife and I are hitting our goals others could be saving zero or 100 times what we are

Oh, I agree. I am working towards my goals regardless of what other people do. But I love data and numbers, so the nerd in me wants to know exactly what percentile I am in, and what percentile I will be in in 10 years.
