I live in Oslo, Norway. Owning a car here is very expensive (gas, tax, toll, etc). I have to arrive at work before 6:15 am to get a free parking space The toll alone costs about $8 per day.

I stand corrected then, the US is the most expensive country in the world with the exception of Canada only.

Why is there both a mortgage and rent?

It is an apartment not a house. The rent cover hot water, maintenance, cleaning, etc. It is just outside the city center. A small house in my neighbourhood costs at least $750,000.

In the US we would refer to that as a condo fee and utilities, not rent. "Rent" refers to a payment you make to live in someone else's property for a time.

I see. Here we would call that an HOA fee.
