I agree with the OP, can't people just like... stop being poor?
It's kind of annoying to have to go into a poor area and see shoddy looking buildings and like drunkards and people just wandering around with this look of confusion on their face.. like, just stop being poor.
...a trend has emerged of people seeking experiences rather than acquiring more things.
Not "rather than" but in preference to.
eg: preferring the reduced cost of a smaller home and no car in order to have their
hard earned funds available for their higher valued uses such as travel.
But be very clear that there are in fact hard earned funds of their own
and their sacrifice is at the edges of their budgets not a fundamental subsistence.

So perhaps some people are choosing a poverty experience...
No. Only a mental defective would choose poverty if they could have better.

Some can... and clearly some will.
But no, the largest percentage of them CAN NOT and WILL NOT.
This was true even before we decimated the no/low skill jobs they once could get.
The question is what the rest of us will do about their growing numbers.
Especially so, as the ability to be self sufficient (even if poor) is just about zero now.
Real poverty in many countries is children not having a home or parents. who live on scrapheaps for a bed , who search landfill sites for food.. who have no means of help by their governments... this is what really being poor is.. and tell me how do you get out of that...

You nailed it.
There is a continuum of intelligence, physical gifts, and psychological and emotional adaptations in any society. For some people it is relatively easy to work hard and compete and rise out of poverty. For others it is very difficult or downright impossible. Particularly in our society where decent paying low-skill jobs are on the decline. So they give up. Or maybe they never try in the first place, because they've never believed that the thing obtained was possible, or worth the trouble.

Right. Americans are just spoiled and used to having anything they want. Most would not last a day in those countries in those conditions.
Real poverty in America is living off the system and simply existing.
why don't you guys think of people choose to be poor because they WANTED to? remember, low income can get a lot of benefits in foodstamps, healthcare, tax, gov support, the list goes on and on. A good example, I know of a family who can choose to do better but NO, they wanted to be low income so they can get all the assistance from the government. a new baby born, all hospital bills paid for, milk can be picked up for free...
that's the answer of "why choose to be poor" for you.

Because even that life is awful.
On your point... some, too many, will choose the path of least resistance (and least effort)
by working the system to allow them that marginal existence. No doubt of it.
No way. The biggest predictor in poverty is your own personal choices after your parents are gone and you're on your own.
It has NOTHING to do with what kind of coin your parents made raising you. Rather the financial choices you make once you no longer have them in your life.
That's an interesting theory that is completely disproven by the facts. Studies show that even a fetus in the womb incurs chemically-induced psychological stress that impedes future development.
