We still subscribe to a paper and for us the online version is free. It used to be free for anyone, but the change was made because so many people would read it and drop their subscription to the paper version. Our neighborhood is full of tech workers from Microsoft, Amazon and Costco, yet surprisingly if you drive around at 7am you will find that more than 50% of the residents have the paper in their driveway.
I have no problem with the idea of pay-per-content, but most papers have taken the outmoded cable tv model of bundling. I would happily pay to read SELECTED articles in one particular Vermont paper, but there is no way that I can justify an online subscription at the rates they want, so instead of their getting a few bucks a year from me, they get zip.
trying using incognito on chrome. I know my local paper only lets you read 10 free articles then your blocked. However if I use incognito the 10 tally resets everytime I go in via a new window.
What's with all the annoying newspaper paywall websites.
I understand print advertising revenue is basically gone but blocking visitors to your sites isn't doing yourself any favors.

I agree it's not a viable business model but trust me, their goal isn't to annoy you the customer. A lot of people think they are entitled to free news, music, games and movies but often forget that the people who create this content need to be compensated for their efforts too.
