A millionaire to me these days would be someone worth over 5 million net. So after any debt you would be worth at least 5 million. Just a million these days is near middle class status with is indeed dwindling.

When I was a kid my uncle and his teenage sons golfed at a course near Ridgewood. By the 1980s the golf course had been replaced with a sprawling subdivision. I'm thinking the property had probably appreciated to hundreds of millions of dollars - to the point at which the golfers could no longer sustain it.

You don't need it. You merely want & desire it.

You don't get out much, do you? All around the country, there are inexpensive public golf courses. Unless you're playing Pebble Beach, golf is very much a middle class sport.

In my town, the muni course is $35 per round. The less expensive of the two private courses is $2,875 for a single membership. If you walk the course, that's all you spend beyond your bar tab. The more expensive club is $3,500 to $5,000 plus you have a minimum monthly spend in the restaurant. At my other place, I can buy an unlimited pass at the resort course for $269. It's a mountain course so you wouldn't want to walk it so the $20 per person cart rental would add up quickly. The muni course in town is $850 and that one is walkable. That's a top-5 course in the state.

A retiree with a $40K income stream between Social Security and pension can play golf every day. I'm describing my next door neighbor.

in these parts even the public ones are not cheap . the private clubs are insanely priced .

my son who is a labor law attorney actually took up golf because of the affluent connections it brings and the wealth of potential clients the game attracts .

more deals Are struck on the golf course then the board rooms .
