Probably some combination of all the above.
Society is aging. Boomers are a large cohort and are and will be retiring, increasing the retiree/worker ratio. The investments portion would largely correlate with the number of retirees. Like I mentioned earlier, I know quite a few people who are working in the underground economy (not necessarily anything illegal), and many of those folks are older and were laid off from long time jobs in the downturn. I also know some folks in their 50s (dad worked at a pharmaceutical plant in the 2000s where many workers were then in their 50s-60s - most were laid off and a lot never found permanent work) that have basically given up.
I know some folks on the dole as well.
