I mentioned to someone that fast food portions have been shrinking while prices have gone up, and she mentioned that it was because the restaurants had to post calories of each portion. Is this true? I thought it was because they were just getting more greedy.
Note: Please post facts I can look up, not conjecture or opinion. I was unable to find a concrete answer online.
Commodity prices have gone up (almost record prices for beef last Fall) and likely play into the price increase/portion decrease. Add into it the increase in minimum wage in some areas.
Several years ago, there were calls from health experts to reduce portion sizes and add healthy food items (like apple slices in kids' meals instead of fries). I think what has happened is that people just order more food.

There is no relationship between calories and pricing.
Food costs have been rising.
Also, package/portion/container/serving sizes are sometimes reduced in lieu of a price increase or with a price increase due to rising food costs.

Remember, ice cream used to be sold by the half-gallon. Now it's only 1.5 quarts, but "looks" the same and the prices did not go down when that change was made. Sugar always came in 5 lb bags. Recently I noticed that they were selling it in 4 lb bags, again, looks very similar but is less sugar and the price didn't go down. With fast food, the beautiful picture of the burger on TV always looks a lot bigger than the actual small one you get when you go there. It's just marketing and making a profit. I don't consider it greed, they are just trying to make up for the increased costs combined with diminishing sales.
