Here's my list.

-Graphing calculators. In my pre-calculus class 10 years ago, said only TI (Texas Instruments) makes graphing calculators (as far as the U.S. is concerned). And TI is a semi-conductor company. Other companies like Casio only have scientific calculators.
-Solution for contact lens, mostly Bausch&Lomb or whatever. But certain chain stores make their own but only sell it in their stores (like CVS, Walgreen's).
-Kidney stone. I had a job interview where they said they are the only company in the U.S. whom examine urine, and then send the patient data to hospitals.

diamonds... obvious one... along with the whole marketing of them as being "forever" and the like.

Kitco Commentary

In my opinion they aren't even that attractive and there are more attractive gemstones, and the whole racket of getting people to pay thousands or more for wedding rings... I'd hope to marry a woman with more common sense then that. We'll be able to mass produce them synthetically in time, but jewelers will still charge an arm and a leg on the perception of value and the insistence of the finance who wants an expensive ring... it has been argued that this area is no longer a monopoly though, however the allure of diamond rings remains.

Not being able to think of any off hand, I googled and found only 2 that could be considered monopolies

Luxottica .. a manufacturer of prescription eyeglasses

Monsanto... 80% of the corn crop in the US comes from Monsanto engineered seeds.

Other examples have been brought up that are not really monopolies... in fact saying these two are is pushing it, except Monsanto tends to throw it's legal weight around and harass farmers.

things involving war...weapon manufacturers to mercenary groups.

not really a "monopoly" as in single one, but few enough that they can split the pie between themselves and be happy with their share of it.

Time Warner cable when that is my only choice for wired Internet / TV. Yes I've tried satellite dish Internet / TV but I don't consider it as reliable as a cable. So I'm stuck with one choice and they are really expensive.

Public utilities that provide the wires or pipes to your home (phone, electric, cable, gas, water, sewer)

Pharmaceutical companies with their never-ending patents on brand name drugs

Not just pharmaceutical companies, but the pharmacies that sell them. CVS and Walgreens are the only viable chains left.

Retail in general is getting oligopolied, just look at Staples and Office Depot/OfficeMax for office supplies, Walmart and Target, etc. Grocery stores are starting to be consolidated at a national level after being the laggard for so long. For example, Albertsons gobbled up Safeway, and along with Kroger, both firms make up the juggernauts of grocery stores.

Macy's is probably the only example of a monopoly, being the only department store to have a coast-to-coast footprint. Even if you merged Macy's competitors into one company, they would barely come close to Macy's footprint. This is typical for a declining industry.

Often in rural areas, there are only or possibly two options for grocery stores.
