Must be fun watching 2 or 3 people exchange identical Visa gift cards at Christmas.

I like gifts, it's nice when people think of you. I don't care what it is.

I don't mind getting store gift cards. But those D___ Visa cards, NO! I got one once and had to call the number on the back to activate and when they activated it I got the REAL one in the mail to replace the one I originally got. There was an activation fee; and after a couple months carrying a balance, there was another fee, at which point I just spent the last of it and said good riddance.

They set it up almost like those ones people get when they have no credit and can't get a regular credit card. I never checked, but I'd be willing to bet that hit my credit report. They're nothing more than a pre-paid credit card and I'd never have one of those.

I must have hit a nerve where many of you give those out and are insulted I suggest they might not be perfect. . .

Oh well.

If you get a $50 visa gc then buy a $50 grocery store gc with it. Then you don't have to be freaking out.

My suggestion is that you tell all your relatives and friends that you refuse to accept a gift card. If they send you one, send it back. Include a note about what a sucky and thoughtless gift it was. You can train them fairly easily to not give you gift cards.

People are trying to give gifts that the recipient can use. They won't give you gift cards if you tell them you hate gift cards. In fact, if it were me, I wouldn't give you anything, because that would be the best way to make sure you weren't going to be ungrateful or entitled about what you receive.

(And no, you are wrong. I don't give gift cards as presents.)

I'm not insulted at all.

If someone doesn't like my gift, they can give it back and it won't hurt my feelings a bit. They won't ever get another gift from me, so it's a win-win all around.

Feel free to send all of your unwanted gift cards to me.

Sometimes I send Target giftcards to my nieces and nephews (who don't live in my area) for exact reason mentioned above. Target giftcards don't have activation fees and Target stores will allow one to pay with the giftcard and for the person to add any difference over the giftcard for their purchase. Also I know that Target is easily accessible for their parents to take them to get stuff that they like/want.
