More than anything, I hate the lack of thought that goes into them. I mean, it's one thing if it's some kind of gift from a client or the some such. But from friends and family? I'd rather not get anything at all.

While I would never look a gift horse in the mouth, a card or certificate for a store appropriate to one's interests does show more thought. For example, a gift card/certificate for a garden center, Home Depot, Auto Parts store, Apple Music, or Amazon for those that use it for most of their shopping. The Visa/MC is just too generic, though I'm still grateful if I get one as a gift.
I've never received one, but I'd be fine with it. I'd go and buy something I wanted.
My family doesn't do much gift giving, so the only way I can think that I might get one would be from a business as a reward or incentive. I'm sure I could find something to buy with it.
Wow. Whining because the cash gift you received is not in the appropriate medium. I think the complainers here should get nothing at all.
