Long time ago my deadbeat dad brother bragged about claiming his kids so he could get a big refund. His kids and their mother were struggling and living a pitiful existence. I did some digging, got his SSN, and reported his butt (in writing) to the IRS and Child Support Enforcement. They came after him with a vengeance to the tune of over $3,000.

Later I proudly told him what I'd done, and for many reasons he is never to darken my door. He is still a piece of you-know-what.

People get paid under the table in cash all the time. It's actually a necessary part of our economy and without it, we'd crash and burn. Taxes are too high, cost of living is too high, and it's the only way some people can get by. Don't rat them out and destroy their lives unless it's a matter of getting an evil person off the street. If it's just an ordinary person trying to scrape by, then shame on you.

Exactly.

Plus I pay my fair share, why would I knowingly let someone else get off Scott free?
It only makes my taxes more expensive by not reporting them as cheats.

Not only tax fraud, but welfare fraud as well. All in one swipe.

I'm glad you don't live near me. I dislike narcs. Anyways, it would depend on the situation, the amount, and the person doing it. If they are a nice person trying to provide for their family, I might let it slip. If they are a cocky drunk or alpha male always sleeping around with lots of different women and in general being irresponsible, I'd probably report em just because it still bugs me women are attracted to seedy trashy types.

I know an employer that pays all her employees 1099 as independent contractors. She pays them 50% cash and 50% legit. The benefits to her are obvious. The catch for workers is, now they claim low income so they receive Government subsidized housing - food stamps - and cash assistance for children, free healthcare, along with a few other things I can't think of right now. These are workers who earn approximately 60K a year. They are doing pretty good with all that cash and Government assistance.
Looks like the IRS doesn't care if it's not over 200K a year or 2 million dollar cheater. Irritates the hell out of me.

This is an industry that is nationwide with probably as many stores nationally as there are 7-11's or gas stations in every state. Do the math. The IRS tax fraud going on has got to be in the Billions (combined) annually.

Think I would need someone smarter than me with the right connections to be effective. So I don't say anything, just feel a little guilty for allowing it to continue at the cost for everyone. Proof is easy.
Best way to fight that is to pay by credit card. Credit card companies settle and must report proceeds paid out to people by law. If there's not cash coming into the business, there's no revenue to not report and they'll need the documented deduction to not pay taxes on it.

Depends on what you mean by very old. He was in his late 30s when this happened, he's in his 50s now.

Yes, you're correct, I'm still alive.

Mostly the deal is simple- I am not sure of anyones' personal business. If someone brags to me about a sexual conquest, I am not gonna tell their wife or hubby (they may be lying). Same with taxes - and, there is a very thin line between creative accounting and fraud.

I do wish people were more honest. I pay every cent and probably more. But I am 100% certain a LOT of people don't.
