Lots of places nicer than the Salton Sea. Even if you like the punishing heat, the sea is shrinking and it stinks. Don't know what anyone would do for a job there.

Used to be a decent place to hang with low budget vagabonds in the winter though.

My pick for cheap but decent places to live, where you actually *can* get a job, is Bisbee AZ. About the nicest climate in the country too. Lots of interesting people, and a fair amount of tourist traffic.

Oh... I gotta say something about Beecher Meet!

There was a very small town near where I grew up called Beecher City, that had a business called Beecher Meat. Butcher I guess. No idea if they thought it was funny.

that isn't correct. they have hot summers but nothing like near the Salton Sea..There are areas near lake Davis which aren't so hot but more expensive. There are many seasonal jobs revolving around recreation and that lake.
They also have enough min wage jobs in Susanville to survive. Nice town, really cute. It's about 1.5 hrs from us. In fact, I think we'll take a day trip there today.

You can actually get a job near the Salton Sea. Not sure why you think otherwise
There are Seniors who need care, those who couldn't afford to move. Sign up for the County IHSS or work for a private Agency. There are a group of welfare recipients, think services their children may need such as respite care provided by the State Regional Center (which now statewide- pays $15 per hr and 20 hrs are automatically granted per week, by default, to those who qualify).

& the Casino jobs -http://redearthcasino.com/index.html#start
Or work at their gas station, pizzaria, ice cream shop, restaurant etc..
Work at Family Dollar store, jack in the box.

There may not be a wide selection but there ARE jobs

The high is >80F for only 2 months out of the year, and it's super dry (lows <50 all year). That's a lot cooler than most of the US in summer.

This is the Salton Sea:

And the unemployment rate is >20%!

There are a lot of beautiful places in CA north of Tahoe that are affordable. Not many are even aware of it. It's kinda funny how people flock to certain spots and inflate the housing.

Any thoughts?
I don’t see the trouble. I was able to buy a housse in California on minimum wage when I bought my first home in 1958.

Meanwhile, the city refuses to approve the upzoning that would enable developers to affordably build an adequate supply of housing.
The city is not to blame for the fact that you have a minimum wage income, and can't afford anything more than the crappiest living arrangements. Building more housing won't change that fact. No amount of zoning will change that. You can't afford $500 now, you certainly couldn't afford a purchased home, no matter the cost.

Working hard and smart is the key.

Woah there, you've gone from ranting about 3% being too much of a contribution to our country on APril 15 to demanding people who make very little money have their entire lives subsidized.

They need to improve their skills, put on their big boy pants, and get a real job. If they don't then yes, they should just work until they drop just like people who don't save retirement with higher incomes have to do.
