So what, the usa is well ahead of where we were pre recession. Why are we responsible for the well being of other countries?? -

You do realize that the notion that "The US don't need nothin' from nobody" hasn't been true since, oh, about 1620?

Not sure about the Norse settlements. Maybe they were totally independent.

The Chinese Alibaba group has expressed an interest in Lazada, an e-commerce entgerprise, based on this expectdation (from Wiki):

South-East Asia market has growing middle class income populations estimated 190 million people (2016) in the region with a disposable income of $16-$100 a day to grow to 400 million people in 2020,


That would be an astounding economic development. Lazada currently markets in Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Because the US is a global empire, and as a global empire, is had both the privilege and the responsibility of global stewardship. This was well-understood in the aftermath of WW2. Why in recent years is it getting forgotten?
