That's a good posting and it's why anyone who says "don't look at social security" as part of the overall discussion - has their head where the sun doesn't shine.
I completely forgot about SS disability. Not sure how I could as every neighbor I had in Mississippi was on disability except the one gal who killed herself trying to become disabled.
Speaking of corporate - bailouts is a huge bunch of BS. Expensive for taxpayers.
So should that dcrutiny include military and defense spending? They're government agencies. How much money did the Pentagon squander again?
There is plenty of waste in government to be spread around of course, and the Pentagon is no exception.
Note that the Pentagon isn't really the problem -- the problem is Congress. The Pentagon & the Defense Department has for years attempted to cut programs that they don't want -- only to have Congress overrule them, mostly because those programs represent jobs back in the home districts. This is one reason Boeing has operations in all of the lower 48 states.
But I thought Obamacare was going to solve these problems? Don't you remember?
* Average family will save $2,500 per year
* Costs will be under control.
* Everyone will be covered.
* Like your doctor? Like your healthcare plan? You can keep it!
Guess that didn't work.
It was working pretty good until the Republicans wrecked it. Word is insurance premiums will go up 18% this year.

It wasn't "working pretty good".... first of all it was an illegal program that forced people to buy insurance. Second - it was sold based on a pack of lies.... "like your doctor, you can keep your doctor"... remember that one? Third - did you notice the huge annual premium increases in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, before Trump was elected?
I don't claim to have all the answers and I'd even be ok with single payer rather than this Obamacare nightmare.
Right. Electric Boat gets the money, USN gets a sub. Lockheed Martin gets the money, AF gets a fighter. General Dynamics gets the money, Army gets a tank.
Did you have a point here?
We give Lockheed-Martin a quarter of a trillion dollars and they give the AF 12 deployed F-35 aircraft, which may or may not return from its first combat mission.
We give the "Submarine Spending Fund" $90 billion a year and the Navy doesn't get any submarines.
How about all those military bases the Pentagon says it doesn't want but is stuck with anyway?
Are you seeing a pattern here? Defense spending doesn't have much to do with the military.
ACA private insurance was funded by income tax receipts and increased premiums for mandatory expansion of health insurance requirements.
Social Security has its own funding through payroll taxes and interest income from the rest of the government.
Medicare has its own funding through payroll taxes and premiums.
Medicaid is funded through payroll taxes and matching state contributions.
The rest of the government runs a 1 trillion dollar deficit to operate programs that require 2 trillion dollars in expenditures. The funding comes primarily from income tax receipts and excise taxes.

I guess you're still running around in shock from $500 hammers and $400 toilet seats.
The enormous costs come from 500-page-per-pound specs set by the DoD. Not to mention the cost of developing massively complex, single-purpose systems that have to withstand battle conditions and not contribute to losses and casualties on our side. Military equipment is always going to be expensive.
But it's the DoD setting the cost parameters, and the suppliers sucking it up. No one is (literally or figuratively) holding a gun to the DoD's head. Two to tango, y'know.
