Was the Fed justified in backing Jamie Diamon with $29B to take over Bears bad paper?

The failure of BSC would have caused a panic that may have brought major damage to the credit markets and banking system. Facilitating the buyout was is the best interest of the country, both Main St and Wall St. This is what the FED is chartered to do, insure stable financial markets and control inflation.

I just don't see how they could NOT bail them out. I, for one, do not want to witness the Great Depression II
