No, people 100 years ago were not saddled with student loan debt because there weren't student loans and most did not go to college. You were wealthy enough to pay for it and already educated enough to pass it or you didn't go. People 100 years ago didn't have 401k's. Much fewer bought homes. People 100 years ago didn't often have "health insurance" or expect society to pay the cost for their misfortune. People got sick or injured and they suffered.

Mostly what has changed are people's expectations of how life should be.
It's better now than it was in 1900, so we should shut up and lower our standards. There was a brief blip in American history where prosperity was within reach for the masses and which created the middle class, but it was such a short blip it should be considered an anomaly and not something we should strive to reach again....okay, got it.

I understand your point, but most who engage in constant breeding out of wedlock are not asking for trouble; they're asking for government handouts.

Actually I've heard it said that she never said that. It was apparently a very successful rumor spread to stir up the masses. It was also attributed to other royalty in other countries before it was attributed to her. Some sources indicate Marie was actually quite generous contributing to charitable causes.

You think you know everyone’s circumstances enough to judge, you’re wrong. Yes there are many who could save more but more are doing their best and still struggling.
You just refuse to recognize that many are simply irresponsible. If the average "struggling" middle class family cuts back on the cable, cell phones, eating out, etc., that alone will result in significant savings. I watched a Frontline episode last night about Dayton, Ohio and they showed these low income families with 3, 4+ kids. Why are people having children when they can barely afford to take care of themselves? And this isn't an indictment on Dayton, this is the case all over the country.

You will always have those who look for the exceptions rather then the rule in these forum discussions

"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche." Technically, it translates as "let them eat brioche," not "let them eat cake."
