Sometimes you need to apply some business sense to government. Federal employee pay seems on the high side to me.
Everyone agrees federal employee total compensation is too high. Everyone except for federal employees and politicians who seek campaign contributions from federal employees.
The problem is if the government doesn't have the employees to do the job, they hire contractors (who end up costing taxpayers more because they charge more). The more people vacate staff positions, the more we are going to rely on private contractors to get the work done.

Many of them are former government employees. They pay a huge premium for cleared positions because they're difficult to replace in the private sector. As a result, there's also tremendous job security with contracting in those fields. In general, government contractors are as poorly regarded as federal employees.
Trump's budget deficit is starting to explode as a result of the tax cuts. Debt has increased by 263 billion dollars over the last two months.
