OMB documents by design are politicized documents since they're prepared under the direction of the White House. OMB defrays a lot of the military costs into other departments and agencies, such as the CIA, DHS, VA, DOE, NSA, etc., as well as excluding the $236 billion supplemental for Iraq and Afghanistan. The straight up DoD budget of $540 billion doesn't begin to capture the total cost of military spending. In addition, the DoD is the part of the budget that's funded by general revenues and as such spent 20 percent more than the taxes collected to support the program. If we included all these other programs that are really part of the military infrastructure as well as their share of the interest costs each year, the true level of military spending would be well over a TRILLION dollars a year.

We should stop funding the military.

It's really not that important.

Japan is doing amazing without a military.

So....do you think Japan uses these to deliver T.V.'s or DVD players? I dunno if it could hold a T.V. It might, though. Those Japanese are pretty slick.

Japan Self Defense Force

Japan's USD $44.3 billion/year budget makes it the fifth largest military spender in the world, after the United States, Germany, United Kingdom and France.

.. Since when does Japan has a military?

And, besides. They spend $44 billion for the 4th largest.

The US is the only stupid country that spends more than $500 BILLION for a military that we use to fight everyone with a turban.

Even if that dropped to $400 billion, we can use $100 billion in other areas that are more needed. Like education.

Japan's had a military for a long time...but as the previous poster pointed out--it's a self defense force, meaning that it is not to be used in an OFFENSIVE capacity...like we do with ours.

If we switched to a SELF DEFENSE force, we probably could save millions, just in terms of supply and logistics alone!

Well, then. Why don't we do that?

I see no point in needing an offense.

The arms race is with the China-Russia axis. The US expects both countries to grow stronger economically in the next 20 years which will allow them to invest more in their military, especially China.

Mm. Makes sense.

However, China can't grow economically without the political side kicking them in as ass.
As for Russia, They're heading back to dictatorship. Or so the communist party is winning votes.

Politically, China and Russia are rocky. And the US needs to rethink some of their current issues.

We need our 'offensive' military capabilities.

To continue exerting worldwide influence and control to protect the multi-national corporate industrial complex.

TV broadcasting [of babe-watch and love-boat] with it's advertising income streams in third world nations, and McDonalds chains in even the most backward lands; all requires our 'offensive' military capabilities to maintain those corporate income streams. Native cultures that are totally offended by their presence and they dislike the influence of their cultures.
