Someone my husband worked with bought each of his kids a starter house. He bought them when the kids were young and rented them out until the kids were old enough to move into them. The renters basically paid for the homes. He told the kids they could do whatever they wanted with the houses - live in them, sell them, rent them out, whatever.

I always thought that was a good idea, although I would be disappointed, I think, if my kids sold their homes. I'd rather they kept the homes so if worse came to worst, they always had a place to live if nothing else.
