Foreign Direct Investment into China the past 2 years has fallen off a cliff. The Chinese central banks are lending money at an incredible rate to domestic companies to keep them afloat. If anything, the Chinese economy is due for a long stagnation, if not shrinking.
Has the epidemic slowed Chinese economic growth so much that it will no longer overtake the US as the world's largest economy this year?
What gave you the impression that they are even close?
US is 24.6% of world GDP and 18% of world manufacturing, China is 16.8% of world GDP and 20% of manufacturing - China would have to grow by almost 50% (46% actually) to match the US, China is biggest manufacturer in the world but not by much over US who is second.
In fact if take China and add in Mexico, Canada, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan (free China) GDP would still be short of US GDP.
Data from IMF 2019 for GDP and Brookings Institute for Manufacturing estimate - Total World GDP: $90.52 trillion
United States - GDP: $22.32 trillion; Manufacturing about $1.8 Tn
China - GDP: $15.27 trillion; Manufacturing about $2.0 Tn
Recent current events probably made it a lot tougher for their economy to grow because now many countries will shift the source of their imports on various products regardless. Their customers will or have already changed with who they do business.
What we should be concerned about is that China produces most our antibiotics and other medicines such as pills for treatments for cancer, depression, high cholesterol and HIV/AIDS and more.
If China wanted to cut us off, the US would be in a world of hurt.
