he didn't overestimate the demand.... he attempted to profiteer in a crisis. Law enforcement historically has gone after brick and mortars for this, but it is also illegal to do over the internet and across state lines.
The brothers donated it because they had little choice after the backlash. Also they're on the feds radar now. Hope they paid all their taxes from their previous activities, because now all the fed agencies will be going after them.
"The items were soon removed and prohibited on Amazon and eBay with Colvin stating that he would donate the items that he could no longer sell, but after no action was taken on the Colvins' part, the Tennessee Attorney General ultimately located the storage unit housing the supplies, seizing all items to donate."

Yeah baby!
I wonder if they will be banned from amazon after this event.

By what legal mechanism did the AG seize the property?
They donated them. They don't have them to sell anymore. A good deed.

They "offered" to donate it. The items were seized by the AG's office because that guy was not responding to the AG office.
"Matt’s website looks a lot different this morning after @TNattygen ordered he and his brother to stop buying and selling. We have reached out to Matt to see when and where the donation is taking place. We have not heard back. @WRCB"
"HAPPENING NOW: Matt did not answer our calls so we went to his storage unit. The AG’s office was on the scene facilitating with the donation. This is the 3rd stop they’ve been to this morning to gather the sanitizer. @WRCB"

Haha, there is not a single good deed bone in their body. This thing started and ends with greed and selfishness. I hope they get all the backlash for life. This sets a good precedent for any future schemes everywhere.
Meanwhile, our son-in-law has a job that involves dealing with the public. I asked him if he uses hand sanitizer. He said that he has been looking everywhere (as part of his job, he visits different stores everyday) and can't find any on the shelves.

His INTENTION was to sell the bottles at a big profit.
"Man who hoarded 17,700 bottles hand sanitizer to sell on Amazon donates his stockpile after national scorn"
"Colvin sold 300 bottles of hand sanitizer at a markup on Amazon before the company removed his listings and warned sellers they would be suspended for price gouging".
Only after he got a lot of scorn and even death threats and learned he could be in serious trouble for price-gouging did he see the light and make the donation.

Yeah, thanks for the elaboration. they didn't donate it. And a forced donation isn't really a donation.

After The New York Times published an article about the brothers cleaning out stores in an attempt to profit off of the public's panic, the article immediately sparked widespread outrage. Many contacted the Colvins directly with hate mail and death threats, one person even showing up to their home with criticism.
Matt Colvin said the outpouring of hate has been scary for him and his family.
“It was never my intention to keep necessary medical supplies out of the hands of people who needed them,” he said, crying. “That’s not who I am as a person. And all I’ve been told for the last 48 hours is how much of that person I am.”
Matt Colvin is facing several consequences. He has made his living selling on Amazon and eBay, but is now suspended from the platforms.
The Tennessee attorney general’s office sent him a cease-and-desist letter and opened an investigation.
“We will not tolerate price gouging in this time of exceptional need, and we will take aggressive action to stop it,” Attorney General Herbert H. Slatery III of Tennessee said in a news release.
